ABSTRACT

Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life is highly recommended by WHO and UNICEF because it provides great benefits for maternal and infant health. However, the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia, including in Pekanbaru City, has not yet reached the national target. Maternal knowledge is one of the important factors influencing the success of exclusive breastfeeding. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between maternal knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding in infants aged 0–6 months in the Payung Sekaki Health Center Working Area, Pekanbaru City in 2025. This type of research is quantitative research with a correlational analytical approach and uses a cross-sectional design. The study population was 116 mothers who had infants aged 6–11 months, and a sample of 89 people were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires. Data analysis was carried out univariately to describe the characteristics of respondents and bivariately using the Chi-Square test. The results of the Chi-Square test showed that there was a significant relationship between maternal knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding (p-value = 0.000 <α = 0.05). There is a significant relationship between maternal knowledge and exclusive breastfeeding. It is expected that the research site will provide information and counseling regularly about the importance of exclusive breastfeeding so that the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding will increase.
